Exploring Burg Hohenwerfen Castle in Werfen, Austria
Explore one of the most beautiful fortress in Austria. I still remember the first time I saw Hohenwerfen Castle. It looked like something out of a fairytale on a rocky hill with mountains around.
Hohenwerfen Castle is a real historic Castle in the Salzach Valley close to the small town of Werfen in Austria. It
was built a long time ago between the years 1075 and 1078. A powerful archbishop named Gebhard of Salzburg gave the order to build it. That means this castle has stood strong for more than 900 years!
The castle sits on top of a tall rock about 623 meters high. When I reached the top I was amazed by the view. You can see the nice Berchtesgaden Alps all around.
The mountains are huge and the fresh air feels so good. No wonder they chose this spot it’s perfect for looking out over the valley and keeping watch.

Orientation – Hohenwerfen Castle Location
Hohenwerfen Castle is located in Central Austria
When I visited the town of Werfen about 40 kilometers south of Salzburg I was really excited to see Hohenwerfen Castle. The drive through the valley was beautiful with tall green mountains on both sides.
Then suddenly, there it was Hohenwerfen Castle standing proudly on a high rock looking over the whole area like a guardian from the past.
The castle sits above the Salzach River and from up there the view is amazing. You can see the river winding through the valley and the mighty Tennengebirge mountains all around. I could easily imagine why this spot was chosen so long ago.
From this height people inside the castle could watch everything happening in the valley below. It was a perfect place to protect the area and keep control over important roads and trade routes. Standing there I felt like I had gone back in time.
About Hohenwerfen A Brief History of the Castle

When I learned about the history of Hohenwerfen Castle, I was surprised by how much had happened there. The castle was first built between 1075 and 1078 during a time.
It was one of three castles built to protect the Archbishop of Salzburg’s lands. it was just a wooden structure but later it was rebuilt with stone and made stronger over the years.
Walking through its old halls, I could feel how important the castle once was. It wasn’t just a home it was a military base a place to defend the valley.
One of the most interesting stories I heard was about Archbishop Adalbert III. He was actually locked up inside the castle in the 12th century!
The guide also told us that Hohenwerfen Castle became famous in modern times because of movies. It was used as a filming location for the 1968 war film Where Eagles Dare.

I visited Hohenwerfen Castle in early autumn and it was just perfect. The air was cool and fresh the leaves were turning orange and yellow and there were fewer people compared to summer.
From my experience, the best times to visit are in the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to November). The weather is usually pleasant not too hot or cold so you can enjoy the views.
If you go in summer, especially in July or August be ready for bigger crowds. That’s when most tourists come so it can feel a bit crowded especially during the castle tours.
