Discovering hidden gems in Abingdon
1 – Bike or Hike The Virginia Creeper Trail
People come from all over the world to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail. I had wanted to try it for years, and I’m so glad I did. The trail is known as one of the most beautiful in North America.
The trail winds through lush forests, rolling farmland, mountain streams, and several trestle bridges. You can bike, hike, or ride horseback on it. It is 34 miles long, starting in Abingdon, going through Damascus and Green Cove, and ending at White Top Station.
Many people bike just 17 miles of the trail. They take a shuttle to White Top Station, the highest point. From there, it is a 17-mile downhill ride to Damascus, where most shuttles pick you up. This is what we did.
You can continue biking the full 34 miles to Abingdon if you want. The 17-mile stretch from Damascus to Abingdon is flat and has beautiful trestle crossings. We plan to bike this part next time.
If you stay at the Martha Washington Inn, they provide bicycles and a shuttle to the top of the trail for a small fee. You can also start biking right in Abingdon.
We rented bikes from the Virginia Creeper Trail Bike Shop. They took us to White Top Station. The shuttle driver gave us lots of information about the area. We learned that Wayne Henderson, the famous guitar maker, lives nearby. He used to be a mail carrier while making guitars for clients like Eric Clapton.
The trail was beautiful, with many bridges and spots to play in the water. There are a few places to buy food, but they were closed when we biked. Bring a water bottle and snacks. Water shoes are also useful for playing in the streams.
Pro-tip: If you visit in the fall, book your hotel and bike rentals a few months in advance. This is a popular time to ride the trail.
2 – Climb Backbone Rock
Backbone Rock is a stunning rock ridge with a tunnel carved through its center. Visitors can hike to the top, wade in the nearby creek, or explore a beautiful waterfall.
The hike to the summit is short but steep. There are several stairs to climb, but the view from the top is breathtaking. Beaverdam Creek nearby is great for fishing or wading and offers a refreshing nature break. Just across the street from the parking lot, you’ll find a gorgeous waterfall. The hike to the waterfall is also short and steep, but definitely worth it.
Climbing Backbone Rock near Abingdon, Virginia, is a thrilling adventure. This rock formation is part of the Cherokee National Forest and provides a unique climbing experience.
The climb is challenging and requires some experience due to its vertical face. However, the effort pays off with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
A short and easy trail leads to the base, making it accessible for most hikers. For a mix of climbing and scenic beauty, Backbone Rock is a must-visit in the Abingdon area!
